New CRYPTOPSY Singer Says He 'Couldn't Sleep' During 'The Unspoken King' Recording Sessions
August 1, 2008Metal Maniacs' Jay H. Gorania recently spoke to CRYPTOPSY drummer Flo Mounier and new vocalist Matt McGachy about the band's new album, "The Unspoken King", for a feature in the August issue. Excerpts follow:
Flo Mounier on the band's past:
"There's no formula to this. It's basically carte blanche as far as extreme metal's concerned. You can do whatever you want and still keep it within something that's pretty aggressive because that's always the factor in CRYPTOPSY's music. But it's always a work in progress. I don't wanna do another 'None So Vile'. There's no reason for it."
Matt McGachy on joining the band:
"Throughout the recording period I couldn't sleep. I would stay up lying in bed, rethinking all of the parts I had tracked, and was wondering if I was actually good enough to be in this band. With two of the most influential death metal singers in the band as my predecessors, I was extremely worried that I would simply not be up to par. But by the time we entered the mixing process, I saw the entire band singing along to my vocals, so I finally felt that I must have done something right."
Flo Mounier on the "sellout" accusations:
"I don't see how it would be selling out if there's no money involved, but everyone's entitled to their opinion. Bottom line is, if you don't like it, don't listen to it. And you've heard the album; it's very brutal, it's very fast, there are a lot of changes. Speed-wise and power, it's definitely the most intense so far. Clean vocals [and keyboards are each] about eight percent of the album. It's just more mature as far as songwriting, and that was intended."
Matt McGachy on writing lyrics:
"They were fed up with the storylines and murder epics — no offense to Lord Worm's lyrics because I and the band truly believe that this was his strongest point as a frontman — but as the music was diversifying, the band also wanted the lyrics to reach outside of death metal tradition."
